To Try An A/C Sealer Or Not?

Providence, Rhode Island's David Sherwood owns a very clean 1992 Mercedes 300D; a car that has only one weakness: the evaporator leaks. It's a very small leak, but David would still prefer not to be forced to regularly top off the system.

He contacted Chris Bede, of www.aircondition.com, after finding links to the A/C sealer articles located on Cool Profit$ Magazine's www.imcool.com. Chris, after telling David that he himself would not even attempt to pull the evap on this car, suggested that goHTSN readers might provide the best input on this specific vehicle-problem combination.

So we're asking you, dear readers, do you have experience with this leak repair job, and did you perhaps try a professional A/C sealer? If so, what has been your experience?

David was quoted $2000 for the 15 hour job. What hurts is the warning he received along with the estimate. It went something like: "Besides risking your car's nicely wood-paneled dash, there are a lot of things that can go astray during the repair. If parts do break in the service process, you (David) agree to accept the additional responsibility for having those repaired/replaced." That's a pretty scary unknown.

Needs qualified A/C Technician in Providence, RI area
David will not attempt a seal job on his own; he is not an A/C do-it-yourselfer. However, his current technician, as good as he is, has no experience with sealants. If you are a qualified A/C Tech, or know of one in or near Providence, please contact David via the link below. Please use the link below to also send comments to David.
