Washington, DC — Feb 21, 2008 — More than 300 people participated in an Institute for 21st Century Energy event marking the February 14 release of an energy security report by the Shell Oil Company.

General James L. Jones (Ret.), President and CEO of the Institute, an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, praised the report, which is based on a 50-city tour by Shell President John Hofmeister. "Having been part of the tour, I can say John and Shell have asked the public the right questions about our energy future," General Jones said. "What should the United States do to manage its growing energy demand? What will our mix of energy sources be going forward?"

General Jones and Mr. Hofmeister, who both spoke at the event, said the next administration must articulate a comprehensive, common-sense energy strategy for the United States, which it has lacked since World War II. "I pity the next President's prospects four years hence if he or she has not addressed this issue," Mr. Hofmeister said.

"More and more, people talk about energy when they talk about national security and global security," said General Jones. "These terms are tantamount to one another."

Shell's report, "A National Dialogue on Energy Security," calls for "each American to find a role and a voice in shaping our energy future."

A Web cast of the Shell event is posted on the Institute's Web site, www.energyxxi.org.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE: The mission of the Institute for 21st Century Energy is to unify energy stakeholders and policymakers behind a common strategy to ensure that America's supply of fuels and power is adequate, diverse and affordable while protecting national security and improving the environment. The Institute also conducts international outreach to address global energy challenges.
